I have a 98 Pontiac Grand Prix, the service engine soon light is on. any ideas?
Are you allowing time for the combustion chamber heaters (glow plugs) to work? You should turn on the ignition, but not operate the starter immediately. The glow-plug tell-tale light (an orange light with a coil-like symbol) should illuminate for between 2 and 10 seconds. Operate the starter as soon as this light goes out, and it should start easily.
The procedure is the same for all diesel engines, but a surprising number of people are unaware.
Could it just be the cold weather?
Maybe the starter motor is knackered.
Maybe the battery needs replacing/topping up.
Maybe low on oil so the starter motor is struggling.
Can you add more details please
