Gear box gone ... already?!!?

Question:
I've got a 52 plate Renault Clio 1.5 Diesel which I've had since new, but the other day when I was driving on the motorway in 5th gear it started juddering and i thought I had a flat tyre so i pulled over and they were fine so i tried to go again and the car was struggling to get up to speed, it sounded like the rev counter was in the red but i was only going about 30 in 3rd, i could get into any gear but i just didn't have the speed so i pulled off and got it towed to a garage who have had a brief look at it and said it could be the gear box that has gone or the drive shaft, and if it's the gear box thats gone it could be £1000 minimum ... is this normal for a gear box to go on a car of that age thats done about 69,000 miles?! Should I complain to Renault Customer service? HELP!

Gear boxes should last longer than this, but the car is well out of guarantee. You are relying on the goodwill of the dealer/ manufacturer. Send them a nice letter and see what they say.

Mouse in oil pan?

I would consider taking the car to another shop for a second opinion. To me this sounds like you have a clutch/pressure plate problem, more then a gear box issue. The car will still move, just wont get up to speed. that tells me that either the clutch is slipping or just plan wipped out...

89 micra no spark good coil good pick up had good spark before carb rebuild?

i have a scorpio that has done 152,000 and the gear box is still brill although it is an automatic so i would have thought you would have got more miles from your gearbox then that, especially being a diesiel i always thought they were harder working cars. i doubt customer services will do anything to help they will most likely say you have thrashed it etc and not their problem , and it aint ,no doubt the car is not under any warrenty still, renaults are nice cars but expensive to repair ,i had a safrane it went wrong and it would have cost me £2000 to fix could not afford it so i had to scrap it. get quotes from other garages. and seek a second opinion.

Wondering if there is a website where i can find wiring diagrams for cars. looking for speed sensor wire.?

Take the car and get a second and Possibly third opinion. I agree with one other comment here, I believe you have a pressure place/clutch/throw out bearing job to do. Manual transmissions last longer than that

Think there may be a problem with the clutch. First check the clutch cable/master cyl./slave cyl.[if equipped]

How do u make sure the timing is set when replacing a timing chain in a 1991 ford aerostar with a 3.0?

A common mistake made by diesel owners, with a standard transmission, is they increase the RPM the same way as a gas engine. Diesel engines have enough bottom end torque to release the clutch at an idle. Excessive clutch wear results.

My car will stall randomly, then take numerous tries to start...sometimes doesn't start 'til next day.

It wouldn't be unrealistic for the clutch to need replacing at this mileage, this would be the most common cause of your symptoms, if a drive shaft goes you wont move at all, equally if the gearbox goes you wont move or you will lose specific gears. High revs with a low speed indicate imminent clutch failure, so avoid using the car until this is resolves as a badly slipping clutch can get very hot and even shatter doing damage to other components such as the bell housing. Good news is it doesn't sound like the gearbox, bad news is a clutch is a servicable item so don't expect one under warranty. Hope this helps!

sounds like a clutch problem possibly fingers broken on the pressure plate.if it was a gearbox problem you would have been picking bits of it off the motor way cant see renault doing anything for you on a five year old car

If a car is making a left turn which wheel turns faster?

Don't think you'll get much joy from Renault, but I must say it sounds far more like the clutch than the gearbox. I'd get another opinion at least. Gearboxes rarely fail unless you've got some very peculiar driving habits!

I have a 99 Ranger w/ 81K, and the windshield wipers turn on by themselves...?

Your clutch is slipping, they are trying to rip you off, get it repaired elsewhere, also if you are in the aa or rac complain to them that the garage you had the car delivered to seem to be trying to rip you off and you want it investigating.
