The dealer states that I should replace the water pump as well. A auto shop states that it is not necessary to replace the water pump put do replace the Serpentine belt as well. Lexus 2001 with 88000 miles. please advice

the normal parts to replace along with the timing belt is the tensioner, belt guides and belt. the dealer stated the water pump because of the milage and the ease of replacing it since they are going to have to remove it. with 88,000 miles on it, its probably a good idea to go ahead and replace it now then wait till it starts blowing coolant out of it. usually thou that is an item that just gets put back on with a new belt. consider the cost of putting it on now to what it would cost to put it on a few days, weeks or months later. there's some suggestions that the dealership actually makes sense on. good luck and hope this helps.

You could replace the water pump as long as you were in there. Later, when you would need a water pump, you would have to take all that stuff off again to get to it. The Serpentine belt is a good idea to go ahead and change.
