Question:
It's a 1989 four door, automatic that sat in lot for a year or more. The car was regularly serviced & well maintained (we know owner). We've done a home tune up (oil, plugs, air filter, pcv and topped up the tires) it's just sucking the gas. The driver is inexperienced so probably not a severe lead foot. Tires are worn, need to be replaced and exhaust is abit loud. My daughter claims you can see the gauge move as you are driving. Any & all advice is greatly appreciated.

Have you had the catalytic converter checked ? If not do so. Any restriction in exhaust flow will also hurt you.If the exhaust is shot remember the car has a computer and responds to things that interupt its normal curve. All of the above can affect milage. First and foremost, check for fuel leaks. These cars are known to be extremely fuel efficient. Secondly, check the fuel pressure regulator. If this goes bad, it lets more fuel than normal pass thru the injectors. Check the O2 sensor if the engine light is on. Those are the few things that can make these cars eat fuel.More Questions & Answers ...
