Does the Daewoo Matiz 796cc have problems with gear changing, particularly when the engine is cold?

Question:
It is a 3 year old Matiz and the gears grate and do not change smoothly until the engine is warm. It is a particular problem when moving from 1 to 2, 2 to 3 and 4 to 3. Is this a problem with the Matiz or this particular car?

It is. Daewoo recalled a load of Matiz to have the gearbox reworked. The problem is due to a couple of washers, however the gearbox needs stripping. Daewoo knew of this problem a long time ago, but refused to do anything about it. I knew of cases where the rework had been done once, gone wrong again and Daewoo would not cover the cost of the work.

Unlike all other cars (which use a mechanical gear linkage) the gear lever on a Matiz is connected to the gearbox by a pair of cables. This is why the gears are always 'notchy' on all Matiz's.

You really need to get it to a Daewoo (Chevrolet) dealer, as no-one else will have the parts or know-how to undertake such an unusual repair.
