Question:
I have a hillman hunter that doesn't run very well... She blows a lot of black smoke and idles similar to a rotary... If i put my foot on the gas she cuts out... I've had confirmation it's not a blown head gasket but don't know what it could be... Any ideas? Help!
Answers:
how can i tell what kind of transmission i have?
If it really is a Hillman Hunter, an old Hillman Hunter, then check the diaphragm on the Stromberg carb for holes. These perish regularly, and the car will run like a bag of sh*it. If not, check plugs and points, and as you have black smoke which indicates rich running, check the air filter is not blocked.what lubricant oil should i use in nissan micra petrol in uk?
Hi, really this could be a multitude of problems from head gasket to difficulties with carbs, piston rings or valve guide issues. Black smoke means it's burning something it shouldn't, IE oil or far far too much petrol. If you can confirm its not head gasket and spark plugs etc are operating OK then I'd start with checking ignition timing and carb balance followed by a compression test on the bores. This is easily done with a compression tester which basically replaces a spark plug and measures the pressure in the bores when you turn the engine over. If they are significantly down on manufacturer's recommended levels then pistons/rings or bores need investigation.
