Beg/borrow/steal(buy) a fuel pressure gauge. At idle pressure is 25-30psi on multi port/ tuned port. Throttle body injection 9-15psi. Any less = trouble.

In order:
1. fuel filter (did not get this way over night) performance degraded a little at a time. Should backfire before stalling.
2. Fuel pressure regulator.
3 Fuel pump... usually before they grenade there will be a shrill whining. Turn ignition on without engine running.. pump will prime for 2/3 seconds and shut off.

What would happen if you were driving and your intake (just the port connected to air filter) disconnected?

If we are talking a 4bbl fuel filter...if no better replace the pump.

if you car has a carb(not fuel inj) after you replace the inline fuel filter, remove the fuel line where it goes into the carb. use a tubing wrench, or you could possiblity round the nut. with line off remoove the fitting, with a 6point socket and replace the small brass looking filter in the carb. this one is always overlooked.

It may be the accelerator pump in the carb...cracked or broken rubber.

Sounds to me like it could be your air pressure in your tires. Also check and make sure that your valve stem caps are tight.
