Ford Focus Zetec over-revs, loses power and coolant safety light comes on?

Question:
2001 ford focus zetec 1600. Starts 1st time, while driving, rev counter goes up to over 300, engine loses power and coolant safety light comes on. According to handbook, this light should only come on if coolant level low and temperature gauge has gone into the red. Engine coolant level fine and temperature gauge stays in the middle, does not go near the red. Can anyone suggest what could be the problem please? am reluctant to drive it, as when it loses power I have to pull over and stop engine. Many thanks for any help.

Where can i put my car to have a M.O.T ?

Sounds like just a fuse problem but to be sure i would take it and put it on diagnostic machine as this will tell you exactly what the problem/problems are for around £40. good luck.
