Question:
basically, the red battery light has started showing up on the dashboard - is this simply a problem with the battery, or could it be alternator problems?

Hi
This, if it isn't the belt slipping, is most certainly the alternator,
but it is worth remembering that if the belt is even only just slipping then the light will come on.

Arrrgghh I'm having car troubles...?
first thing check to make sure alternator belt hasn't come off or very loose. if that looks ok then it is most likely alternator. How do I remove the drivers side window handle on a 1994 Geo Metro.?
Did you check to ensure the belt was tight?I hit a guys truck, while side swiped it and knock the mirror?
You could disconnect the cables at the battery and clean the connection. After those 2 things the 2 you listed are it. How old is the battery? I'd take it to a battery place and have them check it.
There are places that work on generators and alternators that might be able to check both.
Can u put WD-40 on spinners "20"?
have your starting / charging system checked soon as to not leave you broke downguess your alternator is not charging put a volt meter on battery and check charging rate should be over 13.5 volts
If a timming belt breaks on a 2.0 singlr head engine will it destroy the valve train?
The battery light means a fault in the charging circuit if its only coming on occasionaly while the vehicle is moving it could be a loose connection somewhere on the charging circuit or it could be a faulty component on the circuit (ie. battery or alternator). someone would really need to look at it to give an exact answer.Kawasaki how do i tighten the belt?

What stores near orwigsburg P.A. sell spoilers, mufflers, ect for cars?
Many auto parts stores that sell new batteries will check your battery and charging system, and even install a new battery you buy there for free. If the battery caps are removable, fill the cells with distilled water to the bottom of the plastic well. Batteries last 5 years on average and can damage your alternator if they can't hold a charge since alternators are not designed to charge a fully discharged battery. You can measure the battery and charging voltage yourself with an inexpensive Digital Multi-Meter (DMM) (Sears, $15). Simply connect it across the battery with it set to the 20 volt DC scale. After the surface charge has drained off the battery (let car sit for 1 hour), you should read at least 12.5 Volts DC for a fully charged battery. Then with the engine idling, you should read about 14 Volts DC charging voltage.Any way I can convert or compare warm/hot tire pressure readings to cold pressure standards?
sounds like the alternator. if it is your running on battery power alone. check the simple things first alternator belt is it lose or snaped. check the conectors in the back of the alternator they may have come off. if you go to a garage they can drop test the voltage in your battery and tell you. if its battery or altrernator.I need help disconnecting the fog lights in a 2002 PT Cruiser?
Your alternator is going out. just replace it. Simple as that. The red light tells you that your battery is not being charged. This can mean a broken fan belt, or an alternator problem. Get it checked at Halfords for free.
When the red battery light shows up on the dashboard it specifically means a fault with the charging circuit ie the alternator not the condition of the battery itself. 9 times out of ten it's the alternator at fault. Sometimes it can actually be overcharging. If you can describe exactly when the red light comes on eg at idle or at higher speeds only it would help to pinpoint the fault.
Switching From Conventional Oil to Synthetic?
hi if by doing the obvious fanbelt check the light is still on then try checking the connctions at the alternator, even though they seem tight remove and clean the connectors as they do oxidise and creat an open circuit. they should be bolt on connectors, remember to disconnect the battery first and make sure you have your radio code! good luck!!More Questions & Answers ...
