I recently bought a Rover 400 1.4L despite all the stories about the trouble they have with head gaskets. Is there anything i can do to prevent this from happening?

best thing you can do is to make sure the engine has sufficient antifreeze and the cooling system in general is in a satisfactory condition i.e hoses etc. check and renew engine oil using correct grade and keeping at correct level, dont over fill as this will result in exhaust catalizer damage...p,s dont worry enjoy, all cars suffer head gasket prob,s at some time...dont rev the bollocks off it too much

The best way to prevent the head gasket from blowing is not to drive it!we have had rovers for years now, so long as you keep your water topped up you wont have any problems its the people that dont check the basics that get the problems rovers are lovely cars

Rover used an engine known as the K-series for these models and although the engine is really strong and reliable a weak point of it was its head gasket. There isnt anything major you can do to prevent this other than look after your car and check levels regularly, oil and water. regular servicing (oil and filter) will also prolong the life of your engine.Ian

The problem with rover k series engine is that there is not enough sealing surfice and the cylinder's liners they get porousthat is why you get problems with the loss of coolant and that is why the head gasket blowing.
