I just purchased my very first car. How can I maintain it properly so I can keep it for a long time?

Question:
My aunt has purchased a used car under my name. Haven't driven it yet because I haven't picked it up from the dealer yet. It's my very first car and I really have no clue or any basic knowledge as to how to maintain it properly mainly to avoid major problems. I don't really have much money so I'd really wish to keep it in good usable condition everyday without going to a repair shop all the time. I don't have much experience when it comes to car either so please help! I would really appreciate it if you could help me out. Thank you.

First and foremost...get an oil change every 3,000 miles. While there, get tires rotated and every other oil change, change your air filter and check brakes. Replace brake pads BEFORE they are worn out to save your rotors ...which are pricey.

Why is my Check engine light comes on while driving? I own a Honda Civic ESi 95?

You need to maintain your Oil lubrication system and coolant system. 80% of your engine failures are directly related to your coolant system as a root cause. Changing your oil every 3,000 mi. will greatly increase the life of your engine. The longer you go without changing your oil the more water and carbon contaminates get into your. You will score your delicate engine parts if you don't change out your coolant and oil at your recomended intervals. The coolant system is the most neglected system on a vechicle whether it is a gasoline or a diesel.
