96 caprice classic 4.3 - why is the "change oil" light coming on.?
The drive cycle is a 15 mile jaunt that reaches full operating temperature for the engine and exceeds 50 mph for about 5 minutes. Are you seeing that some Fords never check their emissions systems completely! When you disconnect the batt you reset all stored codes and must complete the drive cycle without a failure.
How the heck do the feds let them get away with that!!

You should have a check engine light with a code that gives some hint about "Monitors Not Ready"

The monitors are not ready as you are not driving it right.
How important are motor mounts?
Ford's monitors don't stop after it sees a problem, it continues till it checks everyone that Ford has programmed in their system. Ford doesn't support some that others do.
Ford has it published on how to do it but it can be a pain.. even their dealers and large fleets have issues doing them (they will also not pass all of them over 8,000 feet if I remember)
Basically it reqires disconnecting the battery and starting it up right after or clearing the codes with the engine running (even if it has no codes) then driving as soon as you can afterwards. If not it has to wait 8 hours to test some tests.
Afterwards drive normally about 45-50 mph I find while occasionally decelerating from 65mph to about 30mph. usually I can get all test to pass in as low as 6 miles and i've spent 15 sometimes to get them to pass.. BUT the reqirement above about clearing the codes or disconnecting the battery is a must to bypass a 8 hour soak timer built in by Ford. (also best to do this on a cold engine and run it till it's hot)
Where is the power steering reservoir in my 1997 geo metro?
There should be some recomendations on line on how to get the car to run the test.. depending upon the state, sometimes they will allow a car to pass with 1 test incomplete.. but this is how most Ford dealers get them to pass (it's actually a lot longer process but pretty much I got them to pass basically like this)
