Question:
My mother-in-law has an '94 Nissan Altima (4-cyl) with a rattling timing chain. Is there any way to externally (or even internally) tighten the tensioners or does the whole chain need to be replaced ASAP?
I have a 1991 Honda Accord EX and the idle is running very low and sometimes it stalls.?
Will a failed chain on this engine potentially be catastrophic?

What is the best way to wash a car??
If I remember correctly, there is a TSB (techical service bulletin) on these Altima's with rattling timing chains. It involves removing a metal plate (the top guide) that runs across the two cams that the chain rattles against. Just pull off the cover and you will see it. Call Nissan or a local garage and they should provide you with the full info. There's no way to tighten the chain (that's the tensioners job). If it has high mileage, I would recommend replacing the chain along with the tensioners and guides. You do not want the chain to break!Replace it! Failure will cause lots of damage as the pistons will smash, bend and break the valves.
I hit a guys truck, while side swiped it and knock the mirror?
Any time a person is dealing with noises from a timing chain, belt, or gears they should get them replaced promptly. Broken belts or worn out chains can stretch and cause problems with the engine timing. When replacing belts and chains a new tensioner is sometimes needed because of wear. If a chain or belt breaks you can damage valves and worse. Replace before this happens. Good luck.More Questions & Answers ...
