Question:
Another question. Nissan Maxima 1988. Automatic transmission.
Anybody let a car sit for 6 months, then run it, how much water do you think got into the gas?
1. When shifting from park to drive, the car does not actually shift sometimes. It just stays in park until i jiggle the handle pretty good or overshift into another gear and then backup. This started a few months ago. What could be causing it?
2. When I got the car (used) the other gears (2 and 3 i think) worked but made the car heave pretty bad when shifting(which i found out is characteristic of maxima 88). But the problem is that now when i shift to these gears, nothing happens at all. It's as if im still in regular drive. Any one know what the problem could be?

Start simple.Take a look at the shifter's linkage to the transmission, may be out of adjustment or worn out.1998 Cavalier 2.2L Cooling Fan - Won't turn ON.?
Several problems may come into play here, the first being, the transmission filter and valve body may be gummed up. The transmission shifts through a valve body, valves and check balls may be sticking. You could try changing the filter and fluid, after putting in a cleaner/conditioner. Read the label carefully, and don't leave it in too long.
Changing that may help...
When your lower gears start to go, particularly if it's an '88, chances are your transmission is shot.
My camry is comepletly locked! Please HELP!!? - not the weel!!?
You can check/change your transmission fluid, but don't be surprised if a new transmission is in your future (which, on an '88, I would consider to just scrap the car and get something newer).

The linkage between the shifter and the transmission is loose somewhere. Check at the ends of the cable.Where is the O2 Sensor located on a 2003 Chevy Venture Engine?
Your car likely has a manual shifting cable that attaches from the shifter under the console to the range selector on the transmission. There are two places where this is fastened. One is at the base of the shifter, and one should be right before the cable gets to the transmission. Both of these ends will have plastic clips on them that hold them steady. These both break very easily and cause the exact problem you're describing because the whole line is allowed to move, so the selector cable attached to the shifter shifts in one direction and doesn't in the other direction. Look at these first. If no problem is found there, inspect the base of the shifter. A lot of them have adjustments that can center the shifter on the cable. This is mostly for column shifters though.i had a problem like this but on an older toyota pickup, turns out my shift linkage somehow bent and it wouldnt go in park and same with the gears i wont go all the way into gear and that was making my engine rev and heaving as you put it
Get a good transmission additive to see if that will loosen the crud that has built up inside your tranny.
