2001 Impala LS?

Question:
It has a 3.8 litre V-6 engine with 82,000 ,miles on it. In high gear especially going uphill with light throttle the engine will surge slightly, it can also be noticed on the RPM gauge. surging up and down about 200 RPM's It has new spark plugs and I have changed the fuel filter, the old one was dirty somewhat. I thought for a day or so that corrected the problem but it has not. I have heard that these engines sometimes develp intake manifold leaks. If that were the case, does anyone know what the symtom of that issue would be. Any sugestions on a fix for this surging? Spark plug wires?, fuel injector issue?, any way I can test the intake manifold for leaks? It is cold and wet where I live today and my wife thinks it may be worse in those conditions.
It is definately an engine surgeing and not the lock up torque converter switching in and out. The transmission was in fact serviced at 60,000 with a filter change. And yes at about 45 to 55 MPH

Just a guess, but it descibes your problem exactly.

Customer Concern: Surging about 200 RPM while driving down the road above 40 MPH and at a steady throttle.

Tests/Procedures: 1. Check the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) slip RPM when this is happening. Verify that the TCC duty cycle is above 0, indicating that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is commanding TCC on during the problem.

2. Override the TCC solenoid with a scanner, command the solenoid on 100%, and see if slip RPM comes down below 50 and if the surge is gone.

3. If the surge is gone, then there is a PCM problem. If the surge is still present, then there is a transmission problem.

Potential Causes: PCM

Tech Tips: TCC slip RPM should be 50 or less when the TCC is being commanded on. If the number is jumping above 50 and back down, the TCC is slipping.

Whats wrong with my car?

Look at the things that are less expensive than intake manifold gaskets first. Check your plug wires, your ignition coils, your fuel pressure regulator, your throttle position sensor, things to do with spark and fuel. If your check engine light happens to be on, go to AutoZone and have them hook it up to the thing. They can give you the code for what is wrong. Also check your oxygen sensor(s). Usually, the engine light will come on if this is the prob. Good Luck.
