The problem is what is it worth to replace what a mechanic has screwed up? I have known good and bad mechanics. It is the insurance and overhead that makes the shop charge 3 to 5X prevailing wage. Dealerships are not the only game in town. A $25 oil change can ruin a $2k motor if the plug is not replaced right. Setting the timing wrong can do the same thing.How can you bring shine back to faded auto paint?
A mechanic should make the same wage as a plumber, a police man, a fire man, and a teacher. Lawyers should make as much as garbage men, and fast food workers should get paid enough to feed their families on real food. Job pay is screwed up for a lot of different professions.
The kicker is I do not know a single mechanic that does not enjoy his job. What is it worth to look forward to going to work every day, and play with toys? A great mechanic has a following, and they will follow him (or her) from shop to shop. I would do that for a living if I did not have allergies to petroleum products.

It isn't that the mechanics are paid too much, it's that the shops charge too much. Like you say, the money dosen't got to the mechanic he gets paid "falt rate" which is only a percentage of what the shop charges. The good mechanics are worththier weight in gold and i would gladly pay. Too many shops charge top dollar and haven't a single mechanic that is worth it. Then you have these shops that splash up these "ASE Certified" signs and there is actually only one mechanic there that is certified and the rest are grunts. Yet they charge ASE rates. Like everything else "buyer beware" you reall have to shop around and get references to find a good shop. When I do I never argue about the rates.Installed a 96 dohc ,was a 98 sohc,it wont run now ,what will make it run ?
