As far as the condition of the car, if it is a constant misfire then it could very well damage your catalytic converter. The cat is designed to only accept a set amount of hydrocarbons, maximum. If your car gets to that point, however, you'll know right away when your check engine light flashes at you. A flashing SES light indicates a condition that will damage the cat.
Unfortunately, $800 to $1000 is about right...don't let them con you into only one valve, do a whole head job though...it keeps everything running smoother.

The cost and time of r&r of a cylinder head and getting a valve job done will vary with vehicles and engines.A V12 Jaguar will certainly cost more than say a 4cyl.2.2 Plymouth.Your mechanics's quote probably is competitive with other shops in the area,but it won't hurt to shop.And yes it is serious,and it will not get any better,only worse.That cylinder will not fire at all VERY soon.yes, this is a serious problem. $1000 sounds about right.
He wouldn't just repair one vbad valve. He'd redo all the valves, and that's about the right price. You've spent 90% the cost of a valve job just to get at that one valve, so it would be kinda dumb not to go ahead and do the whole thing.
