How many miles does your '96 Eldorado have on it? The 1996 model cars are all supposed to have OBD-II installed on them. (OBD-II stands for ON BOARD DIAGNOSTICS). This OBD-II system will give you warning lights when services are due. If there is any kind of Emissions problem, the CHECK ENGINE Light will start flashing and a Fault Code Reader can tell you pretty closely to where the problem lies. There are several servicing - tune up plans which you can read about in your Owner's Manual. Better yet, if you will switch to Synthetic Motor Oils, you can do an Oil Service every 10,000 miles, and a major service at 20,000 miles with a tune up at 40,000 miles. Unless you have and an extended warranty, your car is probably no longer elligible for free services or free warranty repairs. Cars newer than the 2000 model can go 15,000 miles between basic OIL SERVICEs. That would make a "tune up" occur at 60,000 mile intervals.

Car question-?

Most tuneups will last 25,000 miles, but you want to watch for signs that it needs service before that...slight hesitation, running not quite as smooth, etc.

"Tune up" is not a good term if you want to get what your car needs without replacing stuff you don't need. Refer to your GM auto maintenance schedule for the best information. The most often needed maintenance is engine oil changes.
