Question:
I own a 2002 Saturn SL with about 70000 miles and a manual transmission. Today, whenever I attempt to go from 1st to 2nd gear, as I shift, the RPMs drop to the point where the car shuts off. So, I have to re-start the car while driving and give it some gas to avoid it from happening again. The car was driving fine yesterday, but now, as I shift the RPM drops like I just turned the car off.
Any suggestions as to what is wrong would be greatly appreciated!

What Size tires can i put on my 1986 monte carlo ss without modifing anything?
First of all, weak return mechanisms on the clutch could cause the clutch to stay engaged after the pedal is pressed. (This is not very likely on a 70k car). Does it feel like a loaded stall or the engine just losing life all of a sudden?
What doe sit mean when an engine is bored over?
There is a step motor on the intake called the IAC that is responsible for adding the necessary amount of air for the vehicle to idle when in neutral and in between shifts. A faulty IAC motor could cause the car to choke airwise between shifts, causing this problem.

On this subject, the IAC is controlled by the PCM based upon inputs like load, gear range (sometimes), among other variables. Basically, a false reading on any of these can possibly cause this.
Automatic versions of your car are equipped with a transmission range switch. When faulty, this switch can cause a similar problem. My source doesn't state whether or not range is monitored with the manual transaxle, however.
