What is the main cause for a check engine light? Oil, trans, radiator are all fine.?
The harmonic balancers on those era GM cars are known to fail. They are part steel and part rubber and as the rubber deteriorates the crankshaft pulley turns and moves when it shouldn't. This will make a clunking sound whenever the engine is running.Get a good light and look at the harmonic balancer on your car. If the rubber is broken and loose between the bolt in the center and the outer part of the pulley that the belt rides on then you need a new balancer. If that's okay then look at the belt tensioner or even bearings in the water pump, power steering pump, idler pulleys or alternator that might also make a noise. Just take the belt off and spin each component and listen for dry rubbing sounds.
