Would using premium gas help create a richer mixture?

Question:
I got a misfire OBD code on my '00 Mazda 626, one mechanic blamed the fuel pressure regulator and another said it's a lean mixture - but both advised avoiding the alcohol-rich Arco fuel.
So since something is not great with one of my cylinders, is using a higher-octane gas going to help richen the mixture, or the lower energy content will actually worsen things?
As you can tell, I'm quite confused by it all, but I'm waiting for the CEL to reappear before I do any maintenance.

Answers:

Body shop or mechanic?

The fuel pressure regulator could be causing the lean condition, So both mechanics obviously agree the problem is a lean condition. The octane rating of unleaded pump gasoline has no effect on air/fuel ratio, octane measures a fuels resistance to pre-ignition or detonation... not energy or specific gravity. The fuel containing higher percentages of alcohol will compound your lean condition as alcohol fuels require a richer air/fuel mixture to maintain similar combustion characteristics.

you can try differn't gas. a lot of engines act differn'tly to differn't types of gas. there is no "positively right" answer. it is a "try it and see" type answer.

The fuel is not the problem, it is a misfire, you need to change the spark plugs and the wires too if the wires have never been changed before.

What is a temperature gage?

Higher octane will not richen the mixture.
