I have a 1988 chevy caprice 4bbl carb 5.0 and when i turn the key off the engine start buking but wont go off.

Question:
Thx for the previous answer but let me be more specific this time.

Hi,can i check how much coolant is required for a coolant change?

The engine runs great when driving its when i try to shut it OFF that its buking but wont stop also it seems to run higer then it was before at idle when i ride i dont even have to give it gaz it accelerate -just a lil .but by itself more then before.all of this wasent happenning before i changed the fuel filter and plugs today since then the motor wont shut down completely just buking. Also i noticed that since the car as a choke on the carburator before i could slow the RPM down by giving it a lil bit of gaz after i started the engine but now it idle faster and wont slow down after a lil push on the gaz pedal. i put it in Drive RPM slows and then in Park the engine revs up then i turn off the key and i cant shut it down cuz to me maybe the choke his jamed and it keeps poring gaz even after i turn it off the only way i shut it down the motor i press on the choke plate on the carbu top -wat can i do- thx to all of ya

Error Code P0751?

spray some wd 40 or penatrating oil on the linkage on the carb and choke before you do any of the more expensive repairs that others list here. maybe your high idle cam is just stuck. if that don't work, then you can try all that other stuff. then start by trying to adjust the choke, and the idle.

Sounds like you need a tune-up and timing reset.

How can i fix a crack in my radiator?

it sounds like the float is getting stuck (staying open) and letting fuel keep going to the pistons have your carb rebuilt

How would I find out the oil capacity for a 1988 Volvo 760 GLE Turbo without the manual? We bought it used?

What you’re experiencing is called Dieseling. This happens when there is enough heat in the motor to keep burning the fuel after the engine has been shut down. A good friend of mine had a 62 ford that would diesel for almost and hour. Your fast idle problem is likely do to the Choke being out of adjustment. The dieseling may be do to an over advanced distributor. You need to look at having the carb rebuilt. It's likely it's never been done before. Take it to a shop that still knows how to do it. Or find out if they can just put a new one on. When they do this they can adjust the choke correctly and adjust the idle. While they are in there adjusting the idle have them double check the timing. In the mean time until you have it fixed. Here is how to stop the engine from dieseling with out popping the hood. When you get read to turn off the motor turn the key off while at the same time stomping on the car pedal. What this will do is flood the chamber so it can not burn the fuel. Don't worry the motor will fire right back up when you go to start it again. You just putting in more fuel then there is air to burn it.

Is there anyone out there that has a car that is a saturn?

the ignition timing to advanced too far

About how much does it cost to fix a blown head gasket for a 1995 cadillac deville?

smokey is correct i had the same year motor , the timing chains on those stretch out and advance the timing, either turn your distributor down a little or run high test gas

My 99 Cougar 6cyl tranny is leaking, am I looking at a rebuild?

aint the timing, folks. when the key is shut off does the distributor continue to provide spark????? NO. it has everything to do with the high idle. if the choke will not open fully, the engine will idle high. once you get the high idle fixed, you will have no more engine run-on (dieseling)

Help with my car problem?

What you need to do is use WD-40 on all the linkage on the carburator, then use carb cleaner in the carb too. If this dosent slow down the idle then turn the idle screw and lower your idle to around 600-700 rpms. Your idle is too high and this is causing your car to run after you shut it off.

I need help finding a truck part.. 89 ford?

It sounds like float level is a bit too high. If not then Idle is set too high. If not then timing is advanced too far. If not then mixture needs to be modified. The best thing to do is just get that Quadra-jet rebuilt. It is inexpensive and most people with some mechanical ability can do them. If you do it yourself just make sure you get the float levels right. Most of the carb kits you get have a guage in them so you get the right level. Read directions, clean parts thoroughly, and reassamble carefully. If you don't want to go through all of that trouble just find something to restrict your fuel line like your old fuel filter did. The solution shouldn't be too hard to find with a little investigating. Good luck.

My saturn starts but it dont stay started unless i keep my foot on the gas pedal?

'88 Chevy's are carbureted????

Is it possible to convert a 2 wheel drive SUV into a 4 wheel drive? If so, how would you go about doing it?

It sounds to me like you need to idle your engine down,or the butterfly valve inside the throat is not closing all the way.If the butterfly is open just a little it will continue to draw in fuel causing it to ignite just from the heat of the engine. The valve looks much like the choke and is near the bottom you should have some type of adjustment.

1986 Volvo 240 GL Problem Gasoline level Mechanical?

your talking about after-run,or(dieseling)turn the idle down and get some higher octane gas.also hows the timing?,it could be off just a hair, enough to make it after-run.
