1996 Nissan Sentra, Fuel Pump?

Nobody stands there and says to the doctor, "Well Doc., I think I'm dying, but I need to know how much $ before I let you look at me" But I am expected to jump right to the billing part, BEFORE I even can make a diagnosis. When I go to the doctor, I have no idea how much until the bill comes a week or two later. If you ask the doc how much, they look at you like you are crazy, and say," I don't know you will have to go down to billing". Of course you are just expected to have insurance, cuz... nobody can pay what they charge!

Locksmith for cars?

OF COURSE too much money is charged for some repairs. And it would appear that dealerships charge more than independent mechanics. The one thing I miss about my ex is that is brother in law was a whiz when it came to working on cars so that repairs that would have cost me hundreds of dollars in a repair shop cost me next to nothing. My dad is a rather decent mechanic himself. The $40,000 worth of tools is not needed for every single freakin car repair. And not every mechanic is spending that. I have a family friend that is a mechanic - a very successful one at that with at least two separate shops, his wife drives a Lexus, he drives a top of the line pickup truck and they have a boat I could comfortable live on year round in addition to other things. It seems in bills I've had in the past that indeed labor is charged by the hour - and sometimes it's more for freakin labor than the part or repair itself would have cost.

How much does it cost to repair/replace a transmission?

And can I just say something to you - given everything you've said above - I am going to assume that you NEVER ***** about the cost of doctor's appointments because guess what? By the time they're done with med school, they owe in the 6 figures. When they do their residency, they really don't make much more than me, a glorified secretary. Many work much longer hours and have a much fuller schedule than any mechanic I know. They need to update their skills frequently because as you know, technology is a rapidly changing beast.

I stuck a 20 in my audio fuse slot which requires a 15 now my system turns on and off every while... help?

I need a 1998 Pontiac Firebird oil pan online, suggestions on sites needed.?

I NEVER ran out of work while I was a mechanic! Of course I always charged less than most so that probably had some bearing on the backlog. You are correct about the tools though. Every 3-5 years manufacturers change the systems so that new electronic diagnostic tools are needed. Those are VERY expensive! I lucked out by having a background in electronics and so was able to slide into computers and programming. ;-)=

Well i dont charge anything for advise. As an old mechanic for 12yrs I since got out off the game due to crappy wages.Must take into count these days with cars becoming more advance and high tech and alot more to pull to pieces just to get to one thing. But in saying that there are plenty of rip offs out there so it does pay to get a secound oppion even if you know the mechanic.

Replacing positive side terminal...?

I'm not sure I have an issue with Mechanics' pay as such. I do have an issue with the padding that dealerships add into the cost of repairs. It is my impression that dealer service departments make up for what the sales department gives away to make the deal. Cars being the complex monsters they are today, require much more maintenance and that translates to a steady stream of clients at the door. When I pay $150+ for a simple task of removing 4 wheels and 'looking' at the brakes - not doing anything but inspecting the brakes - which is tops a 30 minute job, I'm pretty sure the mechanic isn't making $300/hr. But when you complain, you are quickly invited to find a better deal and take it...

Auto maintenance is like gasoline prices - you have to have it and you WILL pay whatever they charge to have it done. The mechanic, like that gas station owner, isn't making the big bucks.

What does" steering angle alignment" mean?

I think they charge to much for me because i`m a low down dirty cheep scape so I do all my own work.If I had to do that for a living I would have to charge office visit, and burn someones wallet just like the doctor does.Mechanics should get more than they do,the dirt, grease and oil falling in there face. And do`nt forget the rust, cuts and burns that they deal with.I will help people that can`t afford to take there car to the shop.We need health insurance for our cars so those hard working men and women do`nt keep getting stiffed by the customer.

One thing you forgot to mention is shop rates. A lot of people think that is what the mechanic makes. Nowhere close. Very few shops offer benefits of any description so that also comes out of the mechanics pocket. I don't now of any profession that takes so much sh-t and I mean right in our face. People drive and cars break down, we have to figure out what happened with very few clues and then take the complaint about how much it costs without loosing our tempers.
