Question:
About a month ago, my rear brakes started grinding, I believe on the drivers' side. I had both shoes replaced but after having gone through 3 sets because even the ones of the dealer were too large! Well, once again they are grinding & I'm wondering what the problem is, why they are already bad. My boyfriend says it looks like he never even replaced them! He works at a service center although is not a mechanic, he's more like "shop help" but he had one of the guy's who's been working on cars for a long time help him and he didn't even understand why they wouldn't fit! My boyfriend seems to think that maybe for some reason they are "sticking" causing them to wear down so quickly, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem & what I should do? I can't afford to keep replacing my brakes! They work fine if I'm slowing down to turn but when I'm coming to a complete stop is when they grind & my brake pedal is real mushy and brakes aren't as sufficient then grind as I start again.

The calipers might need to be replaced with new ones for one. This is wise on a ten year old car, as is changing the brake fluid. This should be done annually to save your parts and will prevent the problems you describe. Another is the pads themselves. Aftermarkets pads are a bust, I've never got them to work more than a few miles on my Dodge. The best answer here is Mopar at the dealer. These are pricey, but the only ones that will work with your vehicle. Hope this helps. How do I remove blood from leather?
It does sound like the brake calipers are sticking, and if so, that will wear down every set of pads until you have the underlying problem fixed. However, the Chrysler dealer (or whatever shop you used) should have known better, and checked the brakes overall. How do i fix minor rust damage on my vehicle?
I don't think we are talking about calipers here, she said rear shoes which means drum brakes. I can't fathom how those shoes can be too big. If they were they would never work right from the start. It seems to me whoever did the brakes didn't do a complete job. Not only should the shoes be replaced, the drums need to be turned, the brake cylinders need to be replaced (esp on an older car) and the spring kit needs to be replaced.
