this is a great question. i have the same problem. i got the battery out, but it left a ring of corrosion in the barrel and i cant get a new battery in there now. need a big snap ring plier to get the other end off, but the bad spot is sort of in the middle. sucks

If you can screw either end off do that and try bumping it lightly with your hand,but be careful and don't get any of the acid on you,you might want to hold it over the garbage can.....

Take both ends off and dump a little baking soda / water in the end with more space. Let stand for 20 - 30 minutes and the batteries should slide out the baking soda will help remove unwanted corrosion
