I own a 98 Pontiac Grand Am SE. And I just had some work done on it to do with the intake gaskit. and ever since i had that work done on it now my check engine light comes on. And the garage tells me it could have something to do with my gas cover. Has anyone heard of such a thing?

Lots of cars nowdays kick that light on when the gas line isn't properly sealed by the gas cap. Messes with fuel mix I think.Change the cap and see.

They'll have to do an engine diagnostic on the car. That is the only way to tell. The test costs about $85 at most places.Why does turning on the electrical items in a car use more petrol - surely this is rubbish ??

t could be a number of things bad conection, it hasnt been reset. I never heard of a gas cover IF you have a husband or a male friend i sugest you have them take the car to a garage a lot of garages will tell females off the wall stuff to get them to come in to make money that they wont tell a male becaues they think most males are macanlily inclined.

Well i think it means just that,Check Engine? is the engine still there ? I would have thought that the garage would have been a little more concerned than that. Yes it means there is something not right.They don't just put the pretty little light there for nothingyes, take and open the gas tank ( remove the cap ) close it back up. some times that does the trick. do not have the car running when you do this after several starts if that was the problem it will shut off. if move have the garage hook it up to the computer and see why it comes on maybe there is some else wrong. it could be some thing maybe someone forgot to hook back up.

I could be anything really. They should be able to put it on the computer at the dealership and it should tell them what the problem is. I've been told that a very common reason is the the gas cap fits improperly but if you've had that checked and that wasn't it then it must be something else. I would take it back to the dealership and have them evaluate the situation. I know it is a pain but you wouldn't want to end up stranded or destroying your engine.yes i heard that just check the cap when put it on a make sure it is tight and the light should go off.

That light scares so many of us and most of the time it's something lame that causes it. Any time mine comes on, I go straight to AutoZone or Advance and ask them to check the computer. They can plug in and tell you what the car's computer thinks is wrong and why it's turning that light on. Better yet, it's free. Then they can help you judge whether it needs to go back to the mechanic or not.

If you had some work done and then it came on, It was probably the work that caused it.But sometimes the cars computer can get flubbed up. Try disconnecting your negative battery cable, and leave it off for a couple of minutes, then re-connect it. That basically re-boots your cars computer and sometimes fixes the problem.

I don't know where you live, but Aamco in So Cal will run a quick diagnostic on your car for free to tell you what that means.yes its possible - try taking the gas cap off - then putting it back on - the fuel system is under pressure and part of emmissions - if the cap does not seal it can cause the light to come on
you can also buy a new cap to see if that works - may take a day for the light to go out
the mechanic should be able to do a diagnostic on the car to see if that is the case or if something else is wrong
Yes, If the gas cap is not sealed properly the check engine light comes on. Just remove you gas cap and screw it back on making sure it gets a good seal. If it doesnt seal you need to replace it. You will know if it is sealed properly because when you open it again it will release a slight build up of pressure.
I think that those lights are always a problem .If your car is running good just ignore the light or disconnect the darn thing.I was asking the two mechanics that are here with me and they got all excited and said you need to sell that car.They said that is one that when you pull up to the shop they all run to hide.I was working on one for a friend at least every week to repair some new problem.I think if it is giving you good service keep driving it,the car is not going to bring in a good price for trade in.

Have you noticed any leaks since the work was done? usually after said work is done a certain amt of turns on the ignition key resets the check engine light.Your light comes on in some vehicles set by the Mfg automatically to come on for oil change purposes. could be a number of things but being u just had work done i would say that your computer is detecting the change .
A faulty seal on the gasket could cause it to read an error also .
yes - it is a nuisance. Make sure the gas cover is on tight. This may also happen because of inferior gasoline, or because of water in the engine department. Only worry if you lose power, or if the engine seems to work hard and sound louder. Did you ask the shop to reset the lights. You may do a search online on how to do that yourself, it is just a series of maneuvers inside the car. Like press brake pedal, flip lights and so on usually.
If the light stays on for three weeks and after you have refilled gas, or of the light returns after reset - call shop again.

hi ive got the same problem with my holden special vehicle in australia that has performance extractors (exhaust) fitted,and i am told the the exhaust gas sensors are causing the light to come on and that you cant do anything to fix the light comming on because i have the extractors fitted,even if i put new sensors .so this might be in the area you sould be looking because you have had manifold work done
