Why does my 4-cylinder GMC Sonoma get a sad 18 MPG?
It could be rings, but it's most likely valves. Sorry, I have no cheap suggestions. My 2000 grand vitara is making a rattling noise on the engine, what is wrong?
You can loose compression from: Leaky/bent valves, bad rings, bad head gasket, hole in piston, cracked/warped head, or a cracked cylinder. In that order starting with the most common. You could also call a broken connecting rod a loss of compression too, but that's a stretch. Why does my car gives a whistling noise when i hit the rev it started recently?
Do what the answerer below me said, that's what I do. 1/2 oz you don't want hydrostatic lock!
an engine is just a great big air pump. if the cylinder isnt sealed the piston cannot squeeze the air fuel mixture. the engine will idle rough and make less power. all the cylinders should make the same amount of pressure. it could be valves, valve seats, camshaft lobes worn, pushrod bent, cylinder head gasket cracked, the head or block could be cracked, a bent connecting rod, cracked or broken piston, broken piston rings, broken rocker arm, collapsed valve lifter, etc. it wont be cheap to fix this.
