Are all auto repair shops crooks?

Question:
I bought a 1995 Geo Prizm on Feb 22, 2006. 3 months later it was in the shop with a bad fuel pump. I had the fuel pump, fuel filter replaced. The shop owner left my key turned on overnight and it cost me a battery, which he charged me $80 for. It also ended up needing a new distributor, which cost $400. So my total bill came to just over $1000. Does anyone know what makes distributors go bad? Should I have refused to pay for the battery because it was the owners fault mine got drained? My husband picked the car up from the shop so I was unable to speak to the men. When the car went in the shop, everything except the fuel pump was fine, and yet it came out of the shop with so much gone wrong. Ugh! Ive thought about this for over a year now and wondered if I got shafted.

I'm sorry that you feel you had a bad experience. Did you buy this Geo from the same Mechanic that you think stiffed you? If not, then you do realise you bought a Used 12 Year old car right?
Ok well, it's old and the fuel pump went out probably from rust or sediment in the gas tank which you would need to replace the fuel filter too cause it is all gunked up with whatever gunked up and ruined the fuel pump...Next...If the shop owner owned up to leaving the key on then he would have been honest enough to split the cost of a new battery with you right if you had asked (since your batt wasn't new was it)?..Distributors wear out just like starters do, starters have brushes and distributors have contact plates that corrode or just wear down nothing. Just like anything they wear out it is not from the battery going dead Trust me.
You Did Not get taken advantage of but you could have called the shop even if your hubby picked the car up and asked about getting some restitution on the cost of the battery. Don't be afraid to go w/ your gut feeling. You have no grounds for any kind of refund a yr later.
Hope you can sleep now.

Auto repair fraud?

Not all are crooks, but most small shops are indeed crooks, sounds to me like you spend about what the car is worth, which I would never of done. And you shouldn't of payed for a battery he drained.

A bad smell why ?

i own a repair shop ,and not all of us are ,most of us just work for a living, but some think the supposed to get rich off this profession,it doesn't happen being a mechanic but its a good feeling to help people out once in a while and get payed for something you like to do anyway, but not all of us are crooks, just a few bad ones in the bunch once in a while like anything else, good luck hope this helps.

Jiffy Lube told me that I needed an air filter. The next oil change, I took my car to my mechanic and told them to put an air filter in. When I went back for the car, he told me that I didn't need one yet and showed it to me.

I took it to the same mechanic to get my 30K mile "check up." I actually told him to do whatever needs to be done. He replaced the brakes (which I needed) and did some other necessary things.

I fully trust my mechanic. But it took a whole bunch of crooks to lead me to this one.

well if he left the ignition on,it can burn up the module, run the battery down, and maybe the coil too.well dear, ive found out a long time ago, theres very few you can trust.i guess the best ones are in the grave.now days, the ones you can count on the most of the time are the small time mechs.,like a shadetree mech.,or someone whos just starting out, because hes usually trying to get the business.

What is the main cause for a check engine light? Oil, trans, radiator are all fine.?

I just went through similar with a brand new car. Not all dealerships are crooks but there are some out there and we must be on our toes to spot them. Unfortunately we don't know until the car have been repaired. I know one thing, I'll never go back to that dealership.

Are steel-toe boots really safer?

well I have been a mechanic for a long time..it paid for my flight career and then some..I am a auto mech and heavy duty..FIRST of all electrical problems are the worse. They can be VERY difficult to find. The key being on...unless it was very cold that night and the battery froze ( discharged batteries can do that) I doubt that ruined your battery. As for the distributor...leaving the key on on that...might cause a problem..So in short i don't think you got shafted on the pump, filter, battery...but as for the distributor..well...Did he just change the module or the whole distributor?
