Why does my car vibrate when idle?

Hi there,

I need directions explaining how to replace motor mounts on 1994 Lincoln Continental.?

I have a 97 Ford Taurus with 75k miles. When the car engine is running the car vibrates quite noticeably. It vibration seems slightly irregular. This happens whether the car is in park, neutral, drive or reverse. When the car is moving the vibration is barely noticeable/not even there.
It has only just started doing this. Any ideas what's causing it?

There are several reasons why an engine runs rough at idle...some of the most common are very simple fixes. Tune-up is in order...plugs, distributor cap, rotor and wires deteriorate with time and mileage...If you can't tune it yourself take it to a reputable mechanic ( $75-$100).
The reason you don't notice the roughness (misfiring) when the car is moving is because a misfiring condition is less noticiple at higher RPM's (engine rotation / minute).
To test this..put the car in park and step on the accelerator (hold it at around 2,500 RPM) and you will see that the misfire is less noticable, or maybe goes away completely.

It could be caused be several problems the motor mount is one, but here are some others, a bad spark plug a dirty stuck egr valve a stuck open evap canister purge valve, and it may need a tune up plugs wires and throttle plate cleaned up.

check to make sure air filter is full screwed down, and check tubes from the air filter housing for leaks, especially if you just had a recent oil change
