I was driving down the highway excelerated to about 65 mph and all of the sudden I start losing my speed and from the hood there was smoke. I then realized that I was out of coolant so I filled it up! When I filled it it the car would not start. i set for sometime and tried again and it still wouldn't start, left it there because i was told i had flooded the plugs. when i returned about 8 hrs later it wouldn't start and the battery was dead, got it home and replaced the battery and when turning the key it acts if it wants to turn over but it doesn't, it cranks but no ignition, what is wrong?

Its a 97 mercury Sable, been running just fine until now!! it has been sitting for a couple of days the battery is still fine but it just won't turn over.

Did you check your thermostat when it quit out? A smoking hood and cut out at that speed and finding the radiator empty is a real bad sign. You may have caused significant damage to your engine (partial seizure?) by overheating it.car keeps shaking at low RPM's?
As far as the battery goes, it doesn't seem related to the initial failure, so I can't see how it would be the plugs or alternator. Should a spark plug go bad, you will feel it and hear it. The alternator only charges the battery, so if the electrical system goes dead, then the car will simply die, not smoke.

If the motor is not spinning over, it froze up from lack of coolant. If it is spinning over but not starting, it may have been hot enough to jump time when it was without coolant.

When an alternator goes out while you are driving, you will notice that the parts of the car that use electricity will not work, (lights will go out, horn wont work....) before it shuts off (actually, this is will depend on the condition of the battery).

Starters normally give you warning signs, like they wont start up the fist time, but eventually do. Gradually, you will have to try to start the car more and more times before it turns over. Sooner or later the starter goes out. <---this is normally how it goes out.

I would look at the coolant factor, I dunno if you had a leak and never noticed or what. Driving around with no coolant after a while will take it toll on your car.
