Any ideas as to why there is a smell like burning rubber coming from the engine area of my 2001 nissan sentra?

you probably have a small oil leak from the valve cover dripping on the exhaust manifold. burning motor oil and burning rubber smell similar. look over the exhaust system to make sure no hoses or wiring has fallen down and made contact with it just in case, but i think you will find the oil leak is the culprit. when the engine is cold, spray some gunk engine cleaner on the exhaust manifold, rinse it with a hose, and see if it goes away for a while,

have you checked the belt, it could be rubbing on something or slipping on a pulley. also look around the battery to make sure there isnt anything shorting out and melting the plastic or rubber around it.

This is just a guess but there is probably something getting against the manifold on your car.I would check the wires and hoses around the manifold,that area gets very hot.The manifold is located on the side of the engine where the exhaust comes out...Hope you find the problem....
