Could be lifters-yes. I had a Dodge Colt that used to do the same thing and drove me nuts! Come to find out it was a bad plug wire that was allowing a spark leak to the engine block-especially when it was damp out. Something to consider if all else fails.

if the clicking noise is related to engine speed, its your lifter(s) that run your valves. they are making noise when they slap.
