If it's an intermittent ticking noise when you shut the engine off, that's normal -- it's just the engine cooling off.

Make sure your engine oil is full. Check the level on the yellow handled oil level dipstick. Your engine valve lifters can make the ticking noise due to excessive clearance. If the noise is new, it probably is not good, but check the oil on the dipstick first, before you start it again. Don't just pour more in. Too much oil is bad too.

I hope this isn't the same think that I experienced a few years ago, I was on the expressway coming home and all of a sudden I hear this clicking noise. I couldn't understand what it could be.
