How do I smooth out or get rid of scratches on front bumper of my car?

I was backing out of a drive parking spot when I gently swiped a support beam with pebble looking things sticking out. It made some scratches on the side of front bummper area. How do I get rid of it without going to body shop? Is there something I can buy from auto parts store to smooth it out?

depends, is the bumper painted or textured? If it is textured there is not alot you can do about it because sanding will just leave more scratches. If it is painted, did it scuff the paint or did it actually scratch through the paint? You can tell by using your fingernail and rub over the scratch, if you can feel a ridge then it is through the paint, if not then it is a scuff and you should be able to remove them simply by buffing the area with a good buffing compound. If it did go through the paint it really needs to be sanded and repainted, but you could go to an auto parts store and buy some very fine grit automotive sand paper and some touch up paint then lightly sand the area and apply the touch up paint. The only problem with this way is your car is most likely painted using a Base coat / clear coat paint system. Touch up paint is only a base coat and you will be able to tell a difference in color. Not sure about where you live but here I can repaint a front bumper on most cars for under $400.
