How do you know what you need a tune up?

Question:
96 Pontiac Sunfire keeps shaking and loses power when I press on the gas

Answers:

does any body know where a oilsending unit is located on a 95 chevey corsica 3.1 engine?

I come across this all the time. The days of 30,000 mile tuneups are gone. Most newer late model vehicles burn so clean that time is what dictates a tune up, over anything else. Basically the wires and plugs get just plain worn out. As a general rule of thumb, around 75-100k, it wouldnt be a bad idea to have one done, HOWEVER If you have a tight budget, I would either take it by an auto parts store that offers free ck engine light code pulling or pay for a garage to "give you an idea what your looking at before they do the work"

Reason being, you could very easily spend 100-150 bucks on doing a tuneup yourself, only to find out you never solved the problem, and may very well have replaced items that didnt need replaced. Just in what little info you left, it could be a plugged fuel filter, a bad fuel pump, plugs, wires, coil, o2 sensor, etc, etc, etc. You would hate to keep tossing money around I have seen plenty of customers spend 600-700 bucks before its done, and could have walked away with a 100-125 bill, just because all they are doing is gambling. Its only cheaper to do-it-yourself, IF you know what needs done, and how to do it.

If you want to do a tuneup yourself 1st, go for it! You may very well take care of your problems, I however would recommend against paying someone to tune it up, and would rather pay them to fix it. Garage tuneups can cost some decent $$.

Also with the amount of sensors on your Sunfire, there are plenty that can go bad and give you the same symptoms you have now.

If the engine runs OK at idle and splutters when you try to accelerate it could be a blocked in-line fuel filter or weak fuel pump pressure. It could also be a restriction in the exhaust or the air filter.

To avoid any expensive damage, you sould take it to a mechanic and get them to diagnose the actual fault.

yep it sounds like you need a tune-up.how you can tell is missing, bad gas milage and high emissions.i would start with a set of new plugs and go from there.maybe a set of plug wires, gas filter, air filter and so forth, but it sounds like its way pass due for a good tune-up.
