My car will stall randomly, then take numerous tries to start...sometimes doesn't start 'til next day.

Question:
I have a 2004 Sunfire. My car usually starts on the first try most of the time, but on 3 different occasions in the past month it has not started for me. The time between failed start-ups has shortened. One night I tried for an hour to start it and it finally started. Ran well for 2 days and then the same thing happened; I stopped at gas station and it wouldn't start again. I had it towed, the dealership said it was the fuel pump and I paid way too much money to get a new fuel pump installed. That worked for about a day. Then one morning it wouldn't start again...and after 20 minutes, it started. The dealer couldn't find any problems and couldn't find any "computer codes." Just 2 days ago, my car wouldn't start and I finally got it to start, then I was going about 25 mph and it stalled once I applied the brakes, at about 0-2 mph. Everytime I try to start it and it won't start, it spins and tries to turn over, and sometimes catches, but only for a second, then turns off. plugs ok. help?

Have you looked at the fuses? A faulty fuse can overheat and cause a failure, but after cooling make contact again to allow a restart.

I had a Buick that did this once. Turned out to be a bad crankshaft position sensor. It was hard to diagnose, because it didn't set any codes.

Fuel System needs attention,

Does this sound right to you?

Fuel filter-check
Fuel pump-check pressure and volume of gas...
Fuel screen in side tank...these are possible and will not show up with an OBDII test.

What do you do if your car keeps smoking and water dissapears from the car.?

Several Sunfire owners are complaining of the same problem on the http://mycarstats.com website. Sign up for your make, model and year car and you can read similar owner complaints of stalling. GM service bulletins indicate some injector problems.

When pulling away from a junction the car revs and pulls away slowly (fiat ulysse 2.0el)?

there could be a few things that can cause this type of problem. I will give you a few suggestions to have looked at. there's the possibility that you have a fuel pump relay getting over heated and causing the pump to shut down. you can check this one by doing a pressure reading on the fuel system next time it wont start again. that will tell you if the pump is still working. An over heated ECU can cause this as well. There's a possibility of a faulty throttle positioning sensor that may cause this as well. not all the time will some sensors set fault codes in the system.. to check that requires use of a dvom to check for your voltage changes and ohms. there's also a possibility of a ground issue that alot of ppl over look in car repairs. if a system is not grounded properly it will create all kinds of nightmarish things that are a pain to diag. better known as electrical grimlins. there is also the possiblility of a crank shaft or camshaft positioning sensor going bad along with a coil pack over heating. As you see there's alot of things that can be looked at. My suggestion is that if your wanting to due this stuff yourself get a good automotive manuel on your vehicle and start in on it. or find a good reputive shop to help find the problem. good luck with your repairs and hope i help a little.
