why does my check engine light stay on in my ford explorer 1996?
The car starts easily, whatever the weather, and runs fine, but after an average of about 10 minutes driving, the car acts as if all life has been removed from the car. it will then only tick over (unevenly). If I touch the accelerator, it starts to rev, but then becomes starved of fuel and dies back to a tickover again.
The fuel pump runs fine when the car is working ok, but when the car is only capable or tickover, I can hear the fuel pump switching on and off (explains the rough tickover)
But what I am unsure of, is what powers the fuel pump. Is it directly from the brain, or is there another computer hidden somewhere, or is the pump controled by another source.. Any help would be much appreciated..

Fault sometimes cures itself if left running on tickover and also dissapears if left swithced of for short time, but fault soon comes back.

Don't worry about the computer, they almost never go wrong and would create a lot more faults if one had. It's very likely your accelerator cable is sticking, catching or worn. The injectors aren't anything to do with it, nor is the fuel pump. If either of these went funny you'd be greeted with a stall, or such a smell of petrol you'd be running for cover expecting the car to go up any minute.

What usually causes a fault like this is the accelerator cable sticks, meaning when you put your foot on the accelerator the pedal goes down but the cable doesn't open the butterfly flap to increase the mix in the engine allowing it to increase revolutions. I'd make this your priority in looking for the fault.

If the car idles ok and its only when you rev the engine it stalls, the problem could be a vacuum leak at the in-let manifold. Check all the vacuum hose's for splits. Also there is a long vacuum hose which runs from the back of the ECU, and i have had problems with this in the past.It sounds like the ECU has malfuntioned
Not sure were it is but it happened to me on the montego and the ECU was in the glovebox.
