Well that depends on your definition of back fire. If it is happening out the exhaust pipe that is actually called and after fire. A back fire is when the spark has ignited the fuel and it comes out the carburetor or intake. If it's coming out of the exhaust that is a common sign of an exhaust leak. The hot unburned fuel when mixed with the cold air out side is igniting. The cold air enters in from pin holes or other cracks in the muffler or exhaust system. This causes the after fire to happen and the loud pop.hay it sounds as if you may have an intake leak, look over the vacuum lines, good luck:)

To add to the two answers you've already got a less likely cause is the ignition timing being out. My money is on an exhaust leak at the manifold.S10 engine swap - 86 into a 83?
