You can have either type of transmission with a turbocharged vehicle. Automatic transmissions are actually easier to drive with a turbocharged engine. The reason I say this is with a proper stall converter, you can load the engine to the rpm the turbo beigns to make boost and launch under boost. Also, automatics will hold boost through shifts unlike manual transmissions in most cases. You can quick shift a manual transmission without letting off the accelerator to try and lessen the effect, but shifting is more difficult, missing a gear means hitting the rev limiter, and some boost is still lost due to lower load on the engine.
