Does a ford transmission go out after only 1000,000miles?

Question:
does a ford transmission go out after only 1000,000 miles it's a 97 eddie b. 5.0 lit automatic that slips in the mornings and in overdrive when it should shift down in to passing gear it will slip, but other than that it works fine. the shop tells me i need to spend $1600.00 and rebuild it all! and i think they may be just trying to get a job that might be premature, will it make a trip to wisconsin and back like it is?
