Question:
I have a manual transmission 1994 Ford Probe with fuel injection. The car has been sputtering on and off for about a year now, ever since I got it back from the shop to get the clutch replaced. It did it on and off back then but hasn't done it again until recently and now it is worse than ever.
It's main problems are after not driving for a few hours and once it warms up, it gets better. It sputters at shifting and tops out at about 80 miles per hour for all of 3 minutes and then will hover around 65 miles per hour in 5th with no sputtering but no extra power either. It's been doing this for the last 4 days and I haven't had a chance to get it to a shop(i don't really want to spend anymore money on it anyway) but today I figured out that once it tops out and starts declining in speed again, if I just let go of the gas and then press it again, I can get it back up to 80, and then repeat the process all over.
Air filter is new. Plugs, wires, rotor, and cap are one year old.
Answers:
Why after changing front wheel bearing & ball joint do i still have side to side play on my transit?
1994 probe being driven at 80 miles per hour its whole life, I would think your piston rings are shot and you have a ton of blow by. In other words you may need to rebuild the motor. Have a compression test done on the engine and see where they are at. Have the tech do a dry and a wet compression test. One tests the compression rings the other tests the oil rings. If the compression tests come out good then you may need a new fuel filter or your clutch may be slipping again. The sputtering would leave me to believe that it's losing compression though. Hope this helps.sounds like a fuel filter to me but it could be emission system
