They are telling the truth if your car is a 78 or newer. It has to do with the smog system and the pressurized fuel cap. A lose oil cap can do the same thing on many cars. Some cars show more than 1 type of light, a service engine for oil changes, tune ups and such. A check engine light for engine problems or even gas caps. They will use a code reader to find out just what the problem is. That can be the cause.You can take the car to Auto Zone and ask them to hook it up to the computer so you can find out what code is showing. You may have to have the computer reset. if this is the case, ask Aamco if they have the computer to do so. If they don't. you can take it to a service station and they should be able to. This may cost you though.

Maam,you need to hire a mechanic to take with you when you go back to aamco or at least a male friend who knows cars because almost all garages start counting money when a woman comes in. I'm sure they were feeding you a line about the gas cap. One of the main things you tell them to return when they replace parts is the old parts. That way you can tell if they even replaced them. You can go to Auto Zone, but all you'll get is a code and the description for the code. There is no sure-fire way to find out if it was the gas cap. The gas cap diagnosis is just a guess. The description would have been for an evaporative... But if it's a cylinder misfire (would mean that an ignition part like plug, coil pack, etc. is bad), the reader would say which cylinder is bad, so in that case, the code reader is helpful.
Don't take the battery cable off and put it on again. You already invested a lot of time and money into the car. If you did that, the check engine light would disappear, but the car would have to go through several (usually two) drive cycles for the monitors (up to eleven) to run and turn on the check engine light again (if something was still out of spec). If you don't want to get the code read now, drive the car for 15 days. If it's still on, then find out what the problem is. But in your case, since you have had major trans work done, I would ask AAMCO to show you the trouble code(s) and descriptions, because a gas cap story might just be an excuse. You never gave a Year make and model of the car. All the newer cars 95 and up use the OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics Generation 2) computer systems. These systems are very sensitive to emissions problems. A lose gas cap can and normally does cause a Service engine soon or check engine light to come on. The fuel systems of cars are sealed to keep the fuel from evaporating out in to the atmosphere. Have the light come back on after they tighten the gas cap? If it is still on I would inspect the o-ring around the cap and see if it is cracked or damaged. I have people bring their cars too me all the time with the check engine light on. I ask them when it came on and they will say, "Just a minute a go after I put in some gas." I check the cap and it is not tight. I tighten it and the light goes off. If the O-ring is damaged you need to replace the o-ring or cap. Make sure the cap clicks when you tighten it down. If after you have done this, and you still have the check engine light (It can take up to 25 miles for the computer to run the check again) then take it back to Aamco and have them check their work.More Questions & Answers ...
