i need to rebuild the engine in my daughters geo tracker the rod bearings are marked 0.5 and the main bearings are marked 0.25
all the places that i have found parts list the bearings in sae sizes what size do i need to get

.25 indicates 1/4 mm undersize.
1 mm = .039 inch
in common terms .5 = .020 inch , .25 = .010 inch

Just get the ones that are marked the same, EXACTLY. But as far as the numbers you have quoted, 0.5 is half of the original value and 0.25 is a quarter. And being that they are rod bearings, the original value is probably in millimeters
