Question:
I have a 96 Honda Accord. 2 Months ago the odometer randomly stopped working. A couple weeks later, it kicked back in again. That only lasted for a bit because the mileage is back to stuck. What is wrong with it and how can I fix it?
Answers:
This is a common problem to all Honda's.

No matter which problem; you must first remove the speedometer to see what is going on.
Does anyone know how to disconnect an alcohol interlick device from your car.?
If it is either one of the first problems then it can be easily fixed with no parts and a small amount of labor( from a technician who knows what is going on ). I would charge you $100.00 to $150.00
if it the second problem then a new or used speedometer will be needed. I would charge $150 to 200 for part plus $50 to $100 in labor.

The difference in price on labor is different between models!
What causes a transmission to shift hard from first to second?
before you do anything though; try resetting the service light . To do this you need a small flat screwdriver or other pointed object. On the instrument cluster is the reset button near your trip odometer reset button (i hope that isn't confusing) . Push this "other button" in once or twice and see if it helps before spending any money.
i hope this helps...good luck
my nww astra wont start its just clicking when i turn the key?
does the speedometer work when the odometer is malfunctioning? if so, your speedometer cable is bad. if the speedo works the whole time, then you have a problem inside the cluster itself. the odometer is driven off of a tiny little gear pressed onto a shaft. sometimes the gear will shift a tiny bit ,and not make contact with the drive gear. you have to carefully take the cluster apart and slide the gear over so that it is making good contact with the drive mechanism. not for the faint of heart. tons of small screws and tiny pieces to lose if you mess up. you may want to check a junkyard, or log onto ebay, or car-part.com.car-part.com has a questionare about your make model year and what part you need, then they return a list of salvage yards that offer that part for sale. you pick who you want to buy from, and contact them directly. it provides their phone number.
good luck.
I think it should be repaired professionally because there is a federal law against odometer tampering and if you do not know what you are doing it could be trouble.

sorry i can't help more
You may have a broken cable that drives your odometer. It comes form the transmission. You should be able to unscrew the cable from the transmission, then pull out he cable from its housing. If it's not broken, the it may be the plastic gears in the odometer.
