Is Cruise Control a Good or Bad thing for MPG?

Question:
After watching an episode of "Top Gear" Jeremy Clarkson stated (while attempting to get 800 miles on a single tank with a V8 Audi diesel engine) that he noticed he was getting a few less miles per gallon when he used cruise control.

However a friend (who's very knowledgable with cars) said cruise control would give you better gas milage because there would be less fluxuation.

Generally speaking cruise control will yield better gas mileage, particularly over a long distance because it keeps the overall average speed more consistent.

Do kia sephias have low oil sensor?

It does however depend a lot on the relative power of the vehicle and the terrain it is covering. If the terrain is very hilly the cruise control will generally apply more acceleration (in an attempt to maintain the set speed) than the average driver will, this will result in lower fuel mileage. Also true of a relatively underpowered car.

If the terrain is flat, the cruise control is generally better at keeping an ideal throttle position than the typical driver.

What will help stop mould from growing in my car?

I get better mileage with cruise control.

My '98 Honda Accord got new powersteering & serpentine belt ;now my car now makes a loud noise any ideas why?

It would depend on roads and such. Straight and level roadways yes, cruise would be better. But on hilly roads, and such, wouldn't make any difference.

How do I get my emergency brake to go down again?

actually depends on the terrain you are driving in... a nice level highway with the cruise control engaged will give you better mileage than using a cruise control in a hilly situation.
You can monitor your speed and acceleration or deceleration better with your foot in hilly situations.

Average price for a fuel pump?

Climate control problem with 1997 Lincoln Town Car?

It really depends on the terrain of the road its being used on. On hilly roads, no, it is better to use your foot, because the cruise control will lug the engine. On flat surfaces, yes, because your foot isn't as steady as the cruise control.

Chrystler Neon 2000 - Sputering when I am ideling, What can it be?

You get better gas milage with your cruise control on. Unless you are driving on hilly roads or against the wind. It will mess your tranny up if you do that.

Soggy carpet...?

It is only good, the reason? Its because on a perfectly horizontal road, someone who doesnt use it will accelerate and not even notice it. usually its a small acceleration and back to the normal speed you want..your foot gets tired, so its not going to hold your speed perfectly. However if you use the cruise control you will get way better gas milage and it will hold the speed smoothly, no jumping in acceleration. The only time you should not use cruise control is when you go up a hill and down hills, then you may have a bad time with mpg. as long as they are not too steep just because this can cause problems with your engine and cruise control settings later on down the road. only good for flat freeways. but the bottom line is that they do get better mpg. you just have to know how to use it.

What is the drive cycle for a 1997 Mercury Marquis after the battery has been disconnected?

Stretch drove using cruise control, and air conditioning. We don’t listen to the radio when we drive and we rarely listen to CDs. Stretch drove 31 miles there and I drove 31 miles back. The difference in our driving was 4 miles per gallon. The only difference in driving was Stretch used cruise control and I didn’t.

Result: 4 mpg savings using cruise control.

How do I remove the rear bumper of a 95 Jeep?

Nothing beats cruise control on generally flat roads. Where hills are involved nothing beats a very attentive drive that doesn't advance the throttle when going up hills. (Of course, nothing gets the drivers behind you more annoyed.)

96 Infiniti- battery drains fast + other problems?

It is usually a good thing for MPG. You use more gas accelerating than you save by coasting. So if you keep the speed constant, you don't have to accerate as much.

Is it true real wheel drive vehicles have less power to the wheels than front wheel drive?

However, the speed you are going has a lot to do with it. You want to be in the highest gear, while going a low, but comfortable RPM (if you drive a manual, and go to low for that gear it will use more gas).

Do I need to install all of the parts that came with my Aem Cold Air Intake?

your friend is right. The cruise control keeps you RPM very steady and doesn't accelerate hard and waste gas. So unless you have a very steady foot, the Cruise control would be best.
