one more thing. going downhill i usually shift transmittion to neutral and when i come to straigh road, i put the appropriate gear as per the speed of car
Answers:
Sounds right. Keeping the RPMs low as you are doing will also make for better gas mileage. I personally always use the transmission to help the brakes when slowing down...but brake pads are a lot cheaper than a tranny so if youre comfortable going into nuetral then I dont see why you would need to change it. Hope thats helps you out
I have a 93' Saturn, the service engine soon light comes on , on & off, what is going on?
The only thing I would not advise you to do is shift to neutral and coast. Very often, this will cause you to use the brakes and clutch release bearing more, both of which are a lot more expensive to replace than gas is.Wondering if anyone knows why my car died?
I doubt you are really saving much, if any, gas by coasting.

If your brakes fail you may find it very hard to slip back into gear because off the wheel speed, by staying in gear you are using the motors back pressure to slow your speed, you should travel down a hill in the same gear you use to go up it.
