It's a good thought but I would not recommend it. Although it can be done and many people do it there are to many steps to write them all out in this forum. Do you have a air compressor, paint guns, pressure requlators, orbital sanders, buffers? If not then for the cost of all those items pay someone to spray it for you. Also the last time I bought paint I paid over $600 bucks for primer paint and reducer alone. If you still want to paint go down to your local store that sells automotive paint and check prices for what you want to do. You can also buy books that will show you step by step how to paint a car. When I owned a paint shop, the occasional kid would come in with a car he wanted painted but couldn't do himself, I used to supervise them through all the stages of preparation, then allow them to watch as I sprayed it, then let them do the final touches to completion, I only charged for materials, but those kids got a real kick out of it, and probably still pass the photos around of the car they painted.
How do I figure out which of the several pulley bearings is bad on my car?
Look around for small paint shops in your area, be polite and tell them you'd like to do most of the work yourself under their supervision.
You need big ticket equipment to respray a car, including an insulated spray booth.
