My serpentine/fan belt is squealing; how do i make it stop?

Question:
I have a 1992 chevy cavalier. The belt squeals usually on the first start of the day and for 30 min or so after that, but usually on the second or third starts that day it doesnt squeak as much. Also warmer weather seems to increase the squealing. Do i need to tighten the belt? how do i do that?

Try rubbing soap on it, like a bar of soap. There is also some stuff called belt dressing, that will keep belts from squeaking.

How do I fix a cracked intake manifold on a 1998 mustang gt?

That belt is self adjusting. There is an idler pully that is spring loaded. What usually happens is the pivot inside corrodes and the srping connot go to full tension. You can try shooting some lube in there but most likely it has to come aprat or be replaced. How long has it been since the belt was replaced? They do need to be replaced even if they dont look worn. They dry out and slip.

1989 Chevy S-10 not starting?

DO NOT add anything to your belts. It squeals because it is loose. Replace the belt (if worn) and the tensioner, its the smooth pulley that puts the "tightness" into the serpentine system. Some tensioners are pre-set, other have adjusting screws. While the belt is off, check all the other components of the system for tightness or too much play.

1992 Corolla DX, Manual transmission. Reverse lights don't work!?

When engine is off grab belt and twist to look at the under side if there are cracks in it or its really dried replace it, it a cheap fix and will save you from a costly repair if it breaks while driving car will overheat and loose powersteering also have someone check the pullies. make sure the belt tensioner still has enough spring in it to apply the proper belt tension. make sure you don't have some kind of fluid leaking on it. and don't spray lube on the belt this will stop squeak for about 1/2 hour and may cause belt to slip and squeal more.

Is there a web site i can go to that will tell me estimates for getting work done on my jeep?

Does it squeal only with the ac on? If so, your compresor may be resisting too much, indicating eventual compressor failure.
