Okay, I have a 1985 Chevy truck I love; not much rust, really. Window ledges, a few spots on hood. Worst are the posts, I think they're called--the part at the back of the cab where the bed starts (sort of). I think I'd leave this part to experts. I've priced restoration and painting-- about $1600 (including fixing a few creases and dents.) I'm afraid to spend the money and then need a new transmission or something big.
I'm not trying to make a show truck. This is my utilitarian, everyday ride. I've refinished furniture and stuff, how hard would it be to prep these spots? What do I need? Any links or advice would be appreciated. Also, is there something you can spray on that will at least halt the progression of the rust? Somebody told me there was...? Plus, I'm a female. Be kind.

It has a cleaner, metal prep and 8 oz of paint. RustSeal goes on thin and covers 12 sq ft in 2 coats. RustSeal is selfleveling and brush marks flow out nicely. body filler use it in body shop. is a mixture of a heavy plastic resin and the dryer or emulsor(small tube red color) the mix at a rate of ,more or less, 2 %
so the resin grey turn reddish.,be careful when drying get hot and burn the skin(,if You have kids do the thing in you working area)

bondo is used to fill holes from rust. where there is no hole just prime it.

Sand it to the bare metal and the surrounding areas. once the sanding has been finished clean out the rust as much as possible then apply an rust inhibitor. The inhibitor can be found in any Canadian Tire Store. afterwards if the truck body demands it fill with a good bondo and sculpt to the shape of the trucks area. When that is finished drying use a sheet of fine cloth backed Emory sandpaper. It is a black paper and is used with water. When the area is as even, and smooth as can be with the trucks body then spray a coat of primer on it. Do not let the primer sit after it has dried!It may look cool to some boys to ride a car in progress but it actually helps the rust gain another foothold on the metal. Because the primer actually soaks up the moisture in the air. So... when the primer is dried ; immediately coat it with some automotive paint. Again you can get a close match at Canadian Tire. Just look in the automotive section and find the aerosol paints. The spray bombs will be sectioned to the make of the truck. You can find paint for Chevy, GM, Toyota,Nissan, and others. If you still have the original paint on your truck chances are you can find the same hue on the rack.
