Question:
Hello everyone, I ve been plagued with the problem of my alternator giving only about 11.6 volts when truck is on. Its a new 105 amp alternator i changed my negative battery wire to ground. I repaired a bad wire to the starter and the car doesnt drain the battery when sitting. I think its not the original motor b/c its carbuerated, maybe a 1986 engine im guessing? do older sub. engines have voltage regulators? please help. Im looking for inlines fuses in the harness to the alternator. Ive tried almost everything i can think of. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Where is the Power steering Fluid tank on the 1997 Buick Lesabre?
You should consider pulling the alternator and having the parts store test it. Even if it is new (assuming a reman) they don't always come out 100%.The voltage regulator setup is determined more by the vehicle, not the engine. Even swapping to an older engine (though it may not be an older motor, the previous owner may have just gutted the fuel injection system on it because they didn't understand it/had problems with it and it was easier for them to throw a carb on it...that would be the most likely scenario in my opinion). That vehicle will have an internally regulated alternator.

At 11.6v, it sounds like to me it is not charging at all. It should be 14.5v at charge.
maybe your starter itself is bad?
I'm thinking the wire from the alternator to the starter has been damaged, and is shorting out at the exhaust manifold or where it goes through the heat sheild tube.
With the engine OFF, check for voltage at the alternator charge wire. (big one)
You should have battery voltage. If not, your wire is bad.

ADDED:
If you do have voltage, it could be the "excite" wire that tells the alternator to work. Could be a blown "alt" fuse under the dash.
What causes bad car wheel alignment?
Your alternator has a regulator built in side of it.Check for power at the field wire[the small one that plugs into the case].The ignition switch powers this which in turn activates the alternator. It's ok to run a wire temporarily from the field directly to the battery positive if you suspect a problem with the circuit. As long as the field is powered ,the alternator will work provided it's not broken.your motor may have been changed but depending on when your suburban was built will determine whether or not it was carburated in 1987 that was the change over year for the throttle body. big wire should have battery voltage, small wire at the top should show battery voltage when key is on its the one closest to pass side at the top [exciter wire] the next one over should show battery voltage all the time, may not unless key is on.
What kind of tape is safe for car paints.?
Is the alternator putting out 11.6 volts or are you just measuring the battery voltage. You have to have 12 volts on the exciter wire to the alternator before it will put out anything. A dozen donuts says that exciter circuit is broken somewhere.More Questions & Answers ...
